Secretary “doesn’t remember” freedom fighter who committed suicide after “insult”
The bureaucrat claimed he did not know the 1971 veteran and that no incidents as described in the suicide note had occurred at his office or residence.
Ayub Khan, the former commander of Muktijoddha Sangsad’s Satkania Upazila unit, was rescued from his hotel room at Topkhana Road 10 in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.
The 62-year-old was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where he died after about an hour. They cited the suicide note to say the man couldn’t kiss the insult.
Police said he had been staying at the hotel since June 7 and died after taking poison.
Khan’s cousin, Amin Hossain, has filed a complaint over the incident.
Khan’s relatives have expressed anger at the secretary for Khan’s suicide while the Chittagong district unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad demanded that the allegation be investigated.
Khan’s nephew, Mr Lokman Hossain, told bdnews24.com: âIt is unthinkable that my uncle would die after being insulted by the secretary. The case is very frustrating.
Citing the suicide note, Shahbagh’s deputy police inspector Mamun Farazi said Khan bribed the secretary for fish, dried fish and money to get him to announce the South Chittagong unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad. .
“He (Khan) wrote: ‘I kill myself as he (Mannan) insulted me by throwing me out of his house when I demanded that he return the money I gave him.” said SI Farazi.
Muktijoddha Sangsad District Unit Chief Md Shahbuddin said: âAyub Khan’s death is regrettable. Who instigated him to commit suicide must be investigated.
Secretary Hannan was not available for comment on Tuesday after the suicide, but a day later told reporters he did not know the freedom fighter.
âA lot of people come to the ministry and meet with the minister and me. This freedom fighter may have come. But I have no knowledge of the incidents that were reported in the newspapers, âhe said.
Hannan said that no one can easily enter his Eskaton home. “Such an incident did not happen at Eskaton Garden or even at my ministry.”
When asked by reporters why a man would have appointed him before he died without a valid reason, the secretary replied, âThat is also my question. I have never tried the dried fish, I can’t stand the smell.
He claimed that the Muktijoddha Sangsad unit mentioned in the suicide note was not under his jurisdiction.
âYet death in this way is sad. If he thought he had been insulted by me, he could have called a press conference or informed the minister.
Khan, the father of two sons and two daughters, was buried Wednesday in the village of Morfola under Satkania in Chittagong.
