May 28e was 139e birthday of freedom fighter and visionary Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. On this occasion, the authors of his biopic, Swatantra Veer Savarkar, released the first look of Randeep Hooda, who plays the revolutionary. The poster reads: “Hindutva Dharm Nahin, Itihaas Hai (Hindutva is not a religion but our history).” The film hits theaters in August.

Producer Sandeep Singh said, “At a time when films by Harshad Mehta, Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi are all the rage, I am more interested in telling the positive life story of Veer Savarkar. He was India’s first dynamic hero and the only man who could have saved the score in 1947. Through this film, not only as a filmmaker but especially as an Indian, I want to tell the world the facts about Savarkar’s struggle. .”

He continued: “Her courageous fight for freedom, her fearless personality that scared the Brits, and her commitment to Hindutva until her dying breath are very inspiring. He is the most misunderstood hero and it is high time to understand him, and above all to celebrate him, this rebel. He never got what he deserved and therefore I plead for Savarkar to be graciously awarded the Bharat Ratna and the Nobel Prize.

Producer Anand Pandit added, “Randeep has time and again showcased his skills as an actor and moreover showed that he can transform into the character he plays. But in the case of Savarkar, he there’s an added dynamic due to his uncanny resemblance to the freedom fighter I’m a lover of history and thrilled to have the cinematic privilege of bringing to 70mm the story of a leader whose story must be told.

Director Mahesh Manjrekar said, “People may have different versions in mind for Savarkar, but as a filmmaker I try to match the same thought Savarkar had. So the character of Savarkar in the film will have no difference from what Savarkar was in real life. He was the iconic freedom fighter and we will make sure he is never forgotten by any Indian.

Randeep Hooda said, “This is a tribute to one of India’s greatest unsung heroes in the struggle for freedom and self-realization. I hope I can rise to the challenge of filling such big shoes with a true revolutionary and tell his true story that has been swept under the rug for so long.

Swatantra Veer Savarkar is presented by Anand Pandit Motion Pictures and Legend Studios and produced by Anand Pandit, Sandeep Singh and Sam Khan.
